I will continue to apply for grants to support my research. Generally I would apply to the National Health and Medical Research Council for these, however there are other smaller charities and philanthropic organisations that also support medical research and if my research falls under what they are interested in supporting I would apply to them two.
The only real alternative to grants in Australia is to form an industry partnership with a company. First you need to have something that can make that company money. In medical research this is often drug companies. However, the disadvantage of industry partnerships is that you loose some of your freedom because you need to focus on what the company is interested in to keep their support.
My research doesn’t currently fall within the interest of any companies I know of, which is why I am funded by grants.
