Well, I have been in the Science field since 2001 – so that’s about 10 years. I’m not sure when you fully qualify to be a “Scientist”…maybe when you make some amazing discovery! 🙂

It’s hard to say when I officially started being a scientist! I finished my PhD in 2005, and then I got to call myself “Dr. Krystal” – so I guess I’ve been a fully qualified scientist for about six years.

It’s a bit of a fuzzy definition really. Some people would say that you can call yourself a real scientist once you finish a PhD (and get to call yourself a Dr), which would be about 10years for me. But there are loads of scientists (i.e. with degrees) working in labs who don’t have PhD’s. In fact, some of the biggest discoveries in science have been made by people without a PhD (like Charles Darwin – evolution by natural selection; and Gregor Mendl – genetics).

Well, I’ve bene working in labs since I was a teenager – I was lucky to be part of the CSIRO student research scheme when I was in High School. Then I worked in a lab after high school, and a little bit during uni.Since I finished my degree in 2001, you could say I’ve been a scientist since then. I don’t know whether you only qualify as a scientist when you have a PhD.

My first job as a scientist was in 2003 so I have been a scientist for 8 years now.
